It's been over a year since my sister died, but I still vividly remember some of the ridiculous things that people said to me at her funeral and soon after her death. I realize that some people just do not know what to say around someone that is mourning the loss of a loved one. It is uncomfortable and people just say whatever they can think of that might help the mourning person feel better. To be honest, if you are feeling that way, it is probably best to not say anything at all.

So here is my list, in no particular order.

1. "She looks good." - Said while looking down at her in the casket.
- Wait ... WHA?? No. She does not look good. She looks dead. How do you think telling me that my sister looks good in death is going to make me feel any better? And, if you truly knew my sister, you would not think that she looked good. If you'd like to say that the funeral parlor did a good job of disguising her injuries, then you would be right. But to tell me she looks good? You're a freaking idiot.

2. "It's all part of God's plan."
- How do you know that? Are you his freaking secretary? Did you pencil her death into his schedule for him when he asked you to? Or perhaps he posted it all up on Google Calendar, and you've been stalking him. That has to be it. I'm going to make sure to go check in on his calendar, too. That way I'll know when to expect the next death he has planned.

3. "How are you doing?" - asked as they hug you at her funeral.
- Pretty damn good, thanks for asking. Hey ... let's blow this snoozefest and go grab some beers, m'kay? Seriously ... what kind of response do you expect from a stupid question like that? No one is doing good when they are a few days out from losing a loved one. Don't ask stupid questions. Ugh.

4. "It will get better with time."
- Lie. What a freaking lie. You know how I know this is a lie? Because she will STILL be dead with time. She won't be there for me to call up and talk to. I won't be able to see her laugh at her kids playing. I won't be able to hug her and smell her still damp hair. Don't try to make me feel better by telling me lies. Does the hurt lesson some with time? Yeah, it does. I don't wake up every day sobbing like I did at first. But "it" is not better. The "it" is the fact that she is still dead, and I still don't get to see her enjoying her son's lives.

5. "I'm sick of you mourning your sister." - said to me exactly one month after my sister died. This jewel was from my husband at the time. He then threw me and the kids out. Yeah ... not much else to say about this one.

I will say, there is one person that really impressed me. Her words have stuck with me since she spoke to me at my sister's funeral. I really have to thank Gena for being so awesome. I don't think that I will ever forget what she did. She came up to me and said "There is nothing that I can say that will make this better. So, can I just give you a hug?" To me, that was the most understanding, supportive, and kind thing that anyone could ever say to someone mourning. So think about Gena's words, and perhaps in the future when you are trying to comfort someone that is grieving, you can use them so you don't sound like an idiot.
It was fun, like always. I was definitely happy to come home, though. There is just something about coming home and sleeping in your own bed. LOL, I might be getting old.
This year we opted to get cabins with electric in them. That was pretty nice. It almost took the whole camp feel out of it .... well, except for the bears, bugs, dirt, lack of running water, no bathrooms, and sleeping on cots. We had Ward trail this year. I'm pretty sure we will never camp there again. The bathrooms are way too far away. The cabins are too close to the road. If you have kids and you have a weak bladder, I would not recommend Ward trail.
I helped create 39 tie dyed shirts to commemorate our annual trip. My hands were aching by the end. Okay, so I really am getting old. LOL They turned out nice. My mother upped the design experience by purchasing an airbrush and creating a stencil for the shirts.
He had been cheating for about 6 months at that time, unbeknownst to me. Could I have stayed and fought? Could I have told him to get HIS stuff and get out? Yes. Did I? No.
Honestly, at that point, I was just done. I was tired of the fighting. I was tired of the abuse. I was tired of the control he had over me and the boys. I packed the boys up and we left to my mom's house.
We stayed with my parents for a month until I found a place to rent. It was hard at first. My mom had just lost her daughter. She was fighting for custody of my sister's oldest son from his dead beat father. And here I come knocking on her door with my 3 boys. We made it work, though.
The boys had to change schools. They lost their house, their school, their friends, their family unit, their dog and their cat. I kept one of the 2 dogs, though, so we at least had Sashi. This, after just losing their aunt.
One of them had a hard transition. You'd have thought it was Timmy, with the Autism, but it wasn't. Timmy had an amazing transition. It was like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He no longer was butting heads with his father, who just couldn't understand Autism. He did amazing in the new school. He stopped having meltdowns. It was amazing.
Niko was pretty heartbroken. He struggled in his new school. He was very popular in his old school, and in the new one, not so much. He struggled with a teacher that, instead of lifting him up and trying to help him to fit in, put him down in front of the class. He was the closest to my sister. He was the closest to his father. This really devastated him.
Adrian took it like a champ. He thinks his father hangs the moon, and that is fine. He really just shrugged it off and went on with life. There were a few nights that he cried because he missed daddy, but that didn't last long.
As for the Ex, he was able to start having visitations with the boys. Now the boys regularly go and see him every other weekend. We are legally divorced. He is engaged to a really nice woman that treats my boys well. (No, this is not the woman he was cheating on me with). He and I have decided that the children are the most important thing, and it definitely doesn't help them at all if we fight all the time. To that end, we've really been quite congenial with each other over the past 6 months or so. It was hard at first. Hard to get past the hurt. Now, the only time I ever seem to get upset with him is if he spaces on the kids and doesn't show up for visitation, but that doesn't happen much.

You know what, though? I'm happy for the first time in a long time. People kept commenting "Wow, Catrina! It's so nice to see you smile again! It's so nice to hear your laugh again! We haven't seen it in forever!" And it really made me realize how unhappy I was.

Something else I realized? I don't NEED a man. I can do this. I'm taking care of my boys. We are having fun. We are living a good life. And we are HAPPY! This has been huge for me. This self confidence was something I've been missing for a long time. I like this new me.
A year ago, on July 9th, my little sister was killed in a car accident. This has been the single most devastating thing that has ever happened in my life. As wild and crazy as my sister could be, I never really thought I'd have to help my mother pick out a casket and her last dress. I never thought I'd have to hold her sons as they cried over the loss of their mother. Never. It was horrible.

This last year has been a long journey through grief. I know I will never stop missing her. Never stop missing her late night phone calls. Her beautiful laugh. Her gorgeous voice. Her long pretty hair. Some days are easier than others. Some days I only think of her a few times, usually with a smile on my face. Other times I think of her and my heart wrenches and I can't hold back the tears.

I wish she was here to see how much I have changed over this last year. I wish we could enjoy the closeness that living in the same town would bring, since I ended up moving to her town after her death. I wish my boys could ride their bikes over to "Aunt Sissy's" house and spend time with her.

Ahhh .... those wishes are what get me every time.
I thought that it only fitting to change my blog, as well. I've closed down BcuzMommySaidSo.com, ThisHooker.com, and my thespasticcat.blogspot.com. I'm going back to blogger and going back to simple and clean. I've sent some of the posts that I could over to this blog, but I've lost a lot of old posts due to some crazy computer crashes.
Stay tuned for new posts talking about some of the changes that have occurred over the last year.
You really should go read it. In the post she spoke of having her boys set the table, and using placemats for them to remember where everything went. I thought this was a really great idea, and definitely wanted to do similar placemats up for the boys.
Then I was over at Family Fun Magazine's website (you all already know I love them!), and saw this great article about a morning checklist placemat! Well I wanted one of those for the boys, too!
I decided to combine the two and make these. They aren't super grand, but my boys love them.
For breakfast - I wanted to not only have a checklist for the boys to use in the morning, but a little something for them to do while eating breakfast if they wanted to. Having 2 boys in OT, because of poor muscle control, having them print and write their names is always a good thing. I wanted them to be a little fun, and be a little educational.
For the dinner side, I used some scrapbooking paper in a design that suited them, and just cut out place setting shapes and used them.

Linked up!

Catrina Crafts A Lothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963236767069917989noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8839068593166183504.post-70987366272677621722011-09-06T21:17:00.000-07:002013-07-31T18:06:18.121-07:00Wordless WednesdayAll he wants for ..... It was soooo much fun. We rented a cabin for a week, along side my friend, my cousins, and my parents. We all had a blast! :)

Allegany State Park isn't far from us. I grew up going there all the time. We'd go for picnics, for a swim in the lake, for fishing, and more. I remember watching old Disney movies at the amphitheater and feeding the raccoons cheese puffs. ASP has been part of my life since I can remember. I really wanted our boys to see the absolute fun you can have in such a beautiful and natural place.

We went on some of the scheduled hikes that the park has during the week. A beaver dam, a creek exploration where they learned about all the living creatures in the water, and an awesome hike where they learned what plants are good for you, and bad for you, that there used to be a zoo in the woods, and there was even a ski jump!

We also took trips to some of our favorite places in the park, like Thunder Rocks and the Stone Tower.

But mostly, we hung out with our family and friends around the campfire. We cooked big meals together and let the kids run wild through the creek and just have fun. We did some awesome crafts like tie dying, bookmarks, necklaces, and more.

We went to the Hootenanny that is on every Thursday night in the park. It is tons of fun and is run by my old gym teacher from grade school! She is a great lady with tons of energy. And holy cow, she's been doing the Hootenanny for 40 years! WOW! Read all about Sally Marsh and the Hootenanny here!

On Sunday when we packed up and left in the morning, instead of going right now, we drove over to the Red House area of the park (our cabin was in the Quaker area), and ate breakfast at the administrative building. This building is old and gorgeous. They have a little museum in there, a great gift shop ... and upstairs they have a restaurant. It was a breakfast buffet with lots of tasty items, and the price was INCREDIBLY cheap. Definitely nice to not have to worry about making breakfast the morning you are leaving (since you will be spending so much time packing everything).

Check out Allegany State Park on facebook, and come visit this awesome park some time if you get the chance. So many people only think of NY as NYC, but NY state has some of the most beautiful state lands of anywhere!

Oh .. and this is not a sponsored or paid for blog post. LOL, this is just me gushing over one of our local treasures.

And to show you ... here are some pictures.

Here is our cabin, with lots of family and friends gathered in front of it, chatting.

Poor Sashi was not a fan of camping. I took the boys last year, and spent the week there with our great friends, Cassie & Pat and their boys. We had a great time, and we're definitely looking forward to going this year.
About the only thing that I did NOT like about camping last year, was trying to get everything together for the meals everyday. I had tossed different meats and things into the cooler, along with other foodstuffs, but I had no real plan.
This year I had a plan all written out, and wanted to prep as much stuff ahead of time, so I didn't have missing ingredients when it came to make things up. I got some great ideas from Make and Takes blog.

Since this year my parents, nephews, aunt, cousins, and our friends are all going, we have a couple evenings where we have a community meal planned. One night my dad will be using the big deep fryer and we'll be cooking up a Turkey. Another evening we'll be having a garbage can dinner. Wait! Don't freak out! It isn't a USED garbage can. You use one of those big metal garbage cans with the lids. My dad put a grate in the bottom of it. He puts water in the bottom of it, so it comes up to the grate, and then we fill it with tons of food. Everyone tosses stuff in. A ham, a head of cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, sausages, steaks, etc. It all then gets put on the campfire and the fire ends up steaming everything in the can.

So this is my plan. Hobo Pockets, Sweet & Sour Pork, Deep Fried Turkey, Meatloaf, and then Garbage Can Dinner.

HOBO POCKETS

I got everything out for the Hobo Pockets and started prepping them for camping. We bought the stuff at Aldi's, so it was super cheap. Here is a quick picture walk through on how to do the Hobo Pockets (super easy). Those will cook up nice in the coals.

One last thing I did before cleaning up after all this prep work was to get another couple onions and dice one up fine (to go on hotdogs the night we get there that isn't listed), and sliced up another one (to go on the hamburgs if we choose). This flashback friday is brought to you by my little cuties from last year's Halloween. Niko was a very happy Frankenstein's monster. Timmy was an awesome Mario. Adrian was a rocket ship.
What are your kiddos going to be for Halloween this year? Have you already started thinking about how you will make their costumes?

Right now my boys want to be ...
Timmy - Anakin from Star Wars
Niko - Papa Smurf
Adrian - Spongebob

For Timmy I'm going to sew him a simple outfit and crochet him a lightsaber.
For Niko I'm going to crochet him a smurf hat with an attached beard. We'll have to look into blue face paint. I'll be looking for a blue turtle neck at thrift stores, and I'll be making some red pants for him out of felt, I think.
For Adrian I'm looking at making his costume out of a box. I think. LOL And make some spray foam that I will shape down to look like SB and then paint it up.
Catrina Crafts A Lothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963236767069917989noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8839068593166183504.post-66959837306828924212011-08-18T19:02:00.000-07:002013-07-31T18:06:18.176-07:00I'm working on a new patternMaking a crochet pattern can be a long process. First you have to decide what to make. Then you need to figure out in your head what stitches would work best to get it to look exactly how you envision it. The next step is making one. While you make it you have to meticulously write down all your stitches so you can recreate it and make it into a pattern.
All of that takes enough time ... but when you don't end up with the exact piece you were envisioning, you end up starting all over again. And again. And again.
LOL
That has been the process with the current hat pattern I'm writing.
My first attempt was too loose on my head. Not slouchy enough in the top area, and not tight enough in the band area. Also, it was a little too short for my taste.

My second attempt fixed the looseness problem. This one fits very well, but it doesn't have the slouchy or the little bit of poof I was looking for.

I'm currently on my third version of this hat, and I'm not happy with this one, either. The yarn I'm using isn't the right weight. It says it is worsted weight, but it actually feels more like sport weight. It is making holes between my stitches because the yarn isn't thick enough.
So right now, I'm frogging the third hat, and I'm going to start AGAIN.Catrina Crafts A Lothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963236767069917989noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8839068593166183504.post-36376981989400536342011-08-17T13:05:00.000-07:002013-07-31T18:06:18.183-07:00Wordless WednesdayAhhhh .... Just as a way to transition him into going back to public school. The secretary told me she'd let his teacher know that I wanted to talk to her and she'd be calling me.
Timmy's teacher called me last night. She didn't know she was going to be having a child with Autism in her class. She didn't know that he had an IEP. She didn't know that he'd be leaving school everyday an hour earlier than the other kids, so she'd have to send an entire lesson home with him every night. She didn't know that he'd get extra time in a quiet room for all tests. She didn't know any of it.
School starts in 2 weeks. Doesn't the school think that preparing the teachers for the kids with special considerations and IEP's is important? This teacher has to plan her last lesson of everyday so that it can go home with Timmy to be completed here. She's supposed to make a special schedule and tape it to his desk for him so he handles transitions easier.
His teacher seems very nice and she sounds like she will be on top of it all. She does know she will be using the amplification system for her class, but that was a given, since she uses it every year I guess. I am just concerned that the school (as always) wasn't communicating all of this stuff with her so she could plan accordingly.
I'm just worried. Is it okay to worry? After all of the rigamarole that we went through last year with this school ... I'm just very, very concerned. :(

Catrina Crafts A Lothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963236767069917989noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8839068593166183504.post-36395851917167475212011-08-12T19:40:00.000-07:002013-07-31T18:06:18.208-07:00Flashback Friday #3

This picture is of Timmy, his friend Austin, Niko, and Adrian at Allegany State Park 2 years ago. I thought this picture was fitting, seeing as we will be leaving for our week long camping trip to Allegany next weekend. I can't believe how much the boys have grown in the past two years! Look at Niko's long hair! I loved his hair like that!
Everyone say a prayer for me this week as I get everything packed up for this trip. Thankfully we will not be camping in a tent. We rented an extremely rustic cabin for the week. We will have cots. There is a stove/oven. There is a woodstove as well. My bff, my aunt, and my mom all rented cabins as well, so it is going to be a BLAST! :) 1 week of screaming, carefree boys running and playing in the dirt, the trees and the creeks. 1 week of bonfires and s'mores and garbage can dinners. 1 week of family, friends & fun! I can't wait! :)

Catrina Crafts A Lothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963236767069917989noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8839068593166183504.post-47661130548858887622011-08-10T23:11:00.000-07:002013-07-31T18:06:18.214-07:00Wordless Wednesday

Here is my Niko this past week while we were camping. He had brought a paper and pencil with him and started drawing.
At first he drew a picture of himself with his glasses on. His head was in the center of the paper and it was a cute picture. He's really big on self portraits.
Then he drew a smaller picture of Niko in the right corner, and Adrian in the left corner. They were below him, because he is the oldest, he informed me.
Then he drew a couple small robots above his head.
Then the robots started shooting at him. It was okay, though, because his head wasn't really his head, it was a giant floating robot head.
Then his brothers started shooting at him. Oh no! They were robots too!
(This is where I stopped making lunch and snapped a picture)

This became a huge robot war in outerspace. His brothers were shooting at him and each other. The unknown robots above him were shooting at him as well. He would draw the lasers shooting, and then he would erase lines where they hit, showing the "breaches in the hull of the robot space ships". Then he'd go back in and patch the holes up with darker lines, showing that they were all fixed. He'd erase the laser lines and soon after, another attack would come from one of the other robots.
More robots flew in to try to defeat the evil flying robot head of Timmy. Bombs detonated left and right.

I didn't get a chance to snap the final picture, but needless to say, you really couldn't tell what he had initially drawn on the paper. If he were to "turn in" this art project to someone, they would probably just see the scribbles everywhere. They wouldn't see the huge imagination that he has. They wouldn't see how he created an entire story around one thing - his initial self portrait. LOL, can you imagine if he was sent home to make a self portrait and came back in with something covered in the scribbles? Yeah, it probably would not go over well.
I guess this is just me saying to really look past what you first see. If someone sat him down and asked him "what is this?" he could tell them this incredible story about floating robot head space wars!
And honestly ... this kid just amazes me with his imagination. To sit there and watch him draw this all out was great!Catrina Crafts A Lothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963236767069917989noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8839068593166183504.post-47486967303436477852011-08-02T14:22:00.000-07:002013-07-31T18:06:18.238-07:00How does your garden grow?Let's take a look at the garden!
